Souks in Morocco
No visit to Marrakech would be complete without a shopping trip to the vibrant street markets, or souks.
Here you will find a maze of vendors with stalls offering a colorful array of goods, including hand woven carpets, leather crafts, herbs, spices, and so much more.
Even if you don’t end up buying anything, the excitement and chaos of the market make it well worth exploring.
Be prepared to haggle with vendors on prices, and don’t feel obligated to buy something until you get the price you want. You can come away with amazing bargains, getting souvenirs like gorgeous rugs, a handsome tea kettle, silver goods, and colorful clothing and jewelry. I met a lady from England who told me that the key to getting a good deal is this:
Once you find the item you want you to ask for 50% off the price. The vendor will quote a new price, then you ask for 30% off the new price.
The vendor will give you another new price. This new price should be much closer to the actual cost so you can then decide if the item is still worth it. Don’t be afraid to walk away as the same items can be found in other parts of the market. However, don’t waste their time by bringing the price of the item down so low that they are barely making any profit off it only to not buy it. One vendor got so pissed with us for doing this he started yelling at us.
Side note: Don’t waste their time by bringing the price of the item down so low that they are barely making any profit off it only to not buy it. One vendor got so pissed with us for doing this he actually started yelling at us.
An important thing to note is that there are people posing as vendors who may try to sell you hash. The best thing to do is to simply avoid and ignore them. Unless that, of course, is what you are after. No judgment. Enjoy responsibly 🙂
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll find that there’s no shortage of fresh foods to enjoy, such as olives, pickled vegetables, pastries, seafood, and so much more. A visit to the Marrakesh street market will be one shopping excursion that you won’t soon forget.
