The Thrill Of The Grill – Toronto’s East End Grill Off

Before I moved to the Entertainment District is Toronto’s downtown core I spent a few years in Toronto’s East End. East York to be general, the Danforth to be specific. The Danforth, the Danny, Greektown, its all the same hood.
Aside from the world famous Taste of The Danforth food festival there is one other foodie festival event that will get your mouth watering. Thrill of the Grill festival.
It’s an annual event held in Toronto where the local restaurants like Allen’s, Factory Girl, and Globe Bistro to name a few will compete for the best barbecue restaurant. The dishes consist of beef, ribs, chicken, and fish. There will also be a cocktail contest featuring Whiskey sour recipes. I’m more of a rum man myself, but whiskey will work just fine.

The name of this festival certainly attracts an audience and trust me it doesn’t disappoint. There’s enough thrill & grill to keep visitors entertained through the day.
Today, however, is a special day. Usually The Thrill Of The Grill will shut down Danforth Ave for a few hours while the Restaurant owners set up shop and get down to the business of barbecuing. Today we got three events in one. Thrill Of The Grill, The Lighting of the Luminos Vale (The lighting of The Prince Edward Via Duct, one of Toronto’s famous bridges) and the Touch Relay for the 2015 Pan Am Games being held here in Toronto.
Barbecue is a weird word. It has a couple of meanings. The word is derived from the Spanish word ‘barbacoa’ or the Taino word ‘barbakoa.’ It is translated as ‘framework of sticks’ or ‘meal of roasted meat or fish.’ Taino is the native language of the Caribbean islands.
Whether you want to call it Barbacoa or Barbakoa, I’m a big fan of anything barbecued and drowning in sauce. Can I get an Amen!
In fact, the best way to savor the taste of beef, pork, lamb and chicken is to roast it. When the Thrill Of THe Grill is happening the scent of a barbecue grilling meat fills the air it gets your mouth salivating. Be warned this is the type of food that destroys diets. So if you are counting calories… Stock up.
In My Own Backyard heads to the Prince Edward Viaduct way above the city for the 6th annual Thrill Of The Grill Ribest to raise money for the Odette Cancer Centre (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre). Also happening on “the bridge” is the torch lighting ceremony for the 2015 Pan Am Games. Finally the bridge itself gets lit up in time to join the party!
The Jack Daniel’s – Whiskey Sour Contest
The Whiskey Sour contest will feature Jack Daniel’s whiskey so here’s an overview of the drink. Whiskey Sour is a mixed drink made of whiskey, sugar, lemon juice, and egg white. The egg white may be left out of the contest since it is recognized as a Boston Sour. The drink is shaken and served over ice or straight up (no ice). The garnish for this drink is half an orange slice and maraschino cherry. Another variation is the Ward 8. This is a more flavorful drink. It contains lemon juice, orange juice, and grenadine syrup.
Interesting fact: The invention of the whiskey sour is credited to Elliot Stubb in 1872. The first time it was mentioned in a newspaper was two years before in the Waukesha Plain Dealer, which is a newspaper in Wisconsin.

There’s no better place to enjoy a barbecue than at the Thrill of the Grill festival. Tourists visiting the city during the event can sample the best barbecue that Canada has to offer. Plus, proceeds from the event will go to local organizations.
It’s a great way to support the community and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time.
